Born: 7th may 1956 in Poland
Age: 61
Area of profession: cinematography
Dariusz Wolski is currently working as a polish film and music video cinematographer. he is best known for his work being a cinematographer on the film series Pirates of the Carribean.
Dariusz Wolski practices framing to capture the lighting as well as the individual figures he captures when he
is directing the cinematography.
In the film "Martian", which Wolski directed photography in. The orange haze of Mars' atmosphere (the film was shot in a desert in the USA) makes an abnormal, but a challenging job for the cameramen to capture Matt Daemon.
Throughout the whole film, you can see the brilliance of all the different camera angles high and low, also parts where the camera is shaking like there is almost no stabilisation which frames the crashing and horrific scenes of the storm which wipes out the habitat.
Below are some images from the film 'Martian' showing some shots that I felt were carefully framed and look very artistic and original showing off various camera angles:
These images stand out to me because of the way Dariusz Wolski has made the Matt Damon stand out like an intruder on this open and vast planet.
Other popular films where Dariusz Wolski has been director of photography:
All the Money in the World (2017)
The Mexican (2001)
Bad Company (2002)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Awards
1995 – Crimson Tide, nominated
In conclusion, I believe Dariusz Wolski is a fantastic cinematographer and director of photography, this is because of the way he uses lighting and various camera angles to improve the framing in his films. This creates some stunning shots so obscure, they make anybody's jaws drop, and this is what I would like to do in my final piece.
