My new lens

about a week ago i was in the fortunate position to be able to buy myself a new lens, the lens is a LUMIX 12 - 35 mm fixed f2.8 (kit lens for the GH4). The lens cost £680 as all micro four thirds mounting lens's are expensive, as there is no competition in the market, and the adapters needed to use other sorts of lenses (speed boosters), are very expensive around £350 on average. here is a picture of the lens.

the lens has a good field of view, wide angle like, the focus ring is smooth to the sun and the quality is great, tough rubber zoom ring and the lens is even ip5x dust and water restart ( ip = rating standard 5 means level of water resistance x = lowest not resistant and 9 = water proof same goes for dust x no resistance and 9 dust proof.)

The first day i Had the lens was on a Saturday, on this day i had two jobs, 1. video at a clients house 2. landscape research where i captured many land scape photographs as you can see in the previous blog and some macro shots as you can see below.

( 1 ) f4 ( 2 ) f 2.8

as you can see in picture 1 there is less of a shallow depth of field affect going on in the background. in picture 2 you can see the maximum amount of shallow depth of field you will be able to capture with this lens, bearing in mind i am using a LUMIX GH4 so results may vary depending on your camera. in conclusion for the macro test, this lens of definitely not bad but not nearly as good as my other lens with an f1.7 aperture fixed at 42.5mm. which has amazing depth of field like the picture below.

compare this to the picture above there is almost no comparison.

now for landscape photography in these pictures, they are taken in aperture f22 with a 1 second shutter speed have a look.

in these pictures the setting on my camera was f22 and HDR was turned on. shutter speed was at one second, this is where OIS is very useful on a lens, and power OIS on this lens was definitely d=needed on these shots, and if definitely worked, definitely ! this lens is ok for landscape but when i zoomed in to 100% the picture was slightly lacking in quality against say my phone (galaxy s8 plus same settings). this is because you really need a tripod to hold this setup for these kind of shots as the lens is quite hefty.

video review out in 2 weeks time.
