Job Roles

I started my photography and getting into cinematography in 2015. It all started with an idea I had. I thought it would be good to drown my iPod touch 4th generation in a pond in my school; the video received 200 views!

Later in April 2015, I upgraded my old phone (a Galaxy s3 mini) to a Galaxy s6 32gb, I made the change purely because the camera on the S6 had been dramatically improved since the release of the S3, the phone at this time had the best camera specifications, a 16mp OIS lens with an aperture of f2.8. It also filmed in the 4K video which no other phone could do at that time (I know all of these specs as I am really into my equipment and always have been).

So, for this project, I am pitching for the roles of DOP, assistant editor and location manager.

DOP

Why would I like to have these roles, well for starters, the DOP role, I have always been into equipment and I believe I have learnt a considerable amount of different types of equipment, for example, I have had two years of experience working with a Steadicam, and I believe I am now able to pull off some clean looking camera shots using it. Then comes the cameras, I am fortunate enough to possess 2 amazing GH4’s, I have a lens for each camera, and I also know this equipment very well, particularly this camera and I believe I can use it to its full potential, by filming in 4K of filing in a slog so we can colour grade the footage later in post.

However, it’s not only this that makes me want to take on the role; it’s also my experience I already have in this field. I have filmed many cinematic short films for college, clients as well as for my GCSE’s; I had also been making YouTube videos for almost four years now. I think that under the right director with the right plan we could make a Stella music video.

EDITOR

So, it all began on February 12th, 2015, at 5:20 pm when I uploaded my first ever YouTube video, unedited and unprofessional. Then on March 24th, 2015 at 9:29 pm, I uploaded my second video using iMovie to edit, although I had no idea what I was doing.

Fast forward to October 1st, 2015, 10:30 pm, I upload my first video using windows movie maker, "the video was not that good", just as I was about to render the video the software would crash. Because of this, came my willingness and desire to film more and edit better. In January 2016, I purchased Sony Movie Studio Platinum, and I loved it. However, the learning curve was steep, to begin with, but by March I had mastered it and was producing weekly videos (this shows that I have had a lot of experience editing and learning how editing software works).

In early 2017 I purchased two 34" monitors for editing and Vegas 14. I am now using Vegas 15 the 2017 version, utilising both monitors to the maximum. Powering these monitors is a top of the range custom built (by me), editing and gaming rig, inside is an MSI Gaming X 1080Ti, a Ryzen 1800x processor overclocked, a Crosshair H100i mk1, 32gb of DDR4 ram,4 TB of SSHD storage and 500gb of SSD storage and RGB lighting. This is all inside an IN-WIN 805 case.

Now in 2019 I have started making the shift towards editing in premier pro, from now on I will be using this software over Vegas, this is because the software is more optimised than Vegas, I have also purchased a laptop to edit on the go now that is also well capable of editing with a full 6 core I7 8th gen processor and a GTX 1070 for accelerated rendering.

So why should I be Editor?

• I have over four years of experience

• I can use multiple Editing Software’s

• I have the equipment needed to edit 4K footage

• I can edit at home and on the go using my laptop

Location Manager:

I would like to take on the role of location manager as I believe I am well organised and confident at planning. I have taken on this role in the past. I think this job wouldn’t be a bad Idea for me as I am happy to fill out multiple location recce’s as well as Risk Assessments. I would also be able to scout out locations easily as the places where we want to film primarily based in Wrington, and I happen to live in Wrington, so this job would be more convenient for me to do. I am also very happy to write up the recce’s; I now enjoy this roll.

So, in conclusion, I have put myself forward for a few jobs in the project. Fortunately, the group has allowed me to take control of all of them, so that’s good news. However, there was some discussion needed where another member of my group Bence who wants to do some editing; we have since after a chat, come to an amendment where Bence would colour grade and add in special effects, and I would edit all the raw footage together, so we will be working together, This is best for both Bence and I as we will both be doing editing, which we are both fond of doing.

Other people in our group, such as Archie and Kasha are our group Director and Producer with Archie being the Director and Kasha being the Producer.

I trust Archie as our Director as he has some fantastic ideas as to what we can do and he also suggests how it can actually be done, he also has an imaginative mindset which its really good as he has already come up with some amazing locations and shots that he would like me to film as camera-man, as well as this he has already appeared like he is devoted to the project, this is reassuring to me and the team as I feel as if I can trust him to get work done.

Kasha has a history of brilliant paperwork skills and trust her to complete our pre-production folder to a distinction standard, a job that I have had to do in my previous projects, so its sweet that it’s not entirely my responsibility for once, this will be better for me as it means I can concentrate more on the cinematography and editing planning other than the proposal, treatment and copyright considerations. I am happy with Kasha being our producer, and I can’t wait until we have a fixed plan, so we can get to work planning it!
