Famous Film Scene

On Monday the 25th of February, our teachers presented us with a task to re-create a short famous film scene. I was partnered up with another student in the course called Dan Clark. We firstly had many ideas; one was to try and recreate the car separation scene from Fast and Furious Seven, that was filmed in tribute to Paul Walker, however, this was proving a problem as we could not find two ideal roads and a second driver. So, our next idea was to do a classroom detention scene from a movie called 'The Breakfast Club', however, again the problem with this scene was that we couldn’t film in the library within our two shooting days and we did not have enough actors. Though we did eventually come up with the idea to recreate the ‘Wazzup’ scene from Scary Movie 1, this idea was possible, as we would only need 3 actors and one could play both the actual cream character and another of the boys who picks up the phone. We began to think about the shots we would need after sorting out our third actor Jamie (Dan’s mate). After this, we jotted down our script and finished off the shot list, equipment list and finalising what time we would commence the shoot, at 6 pm in Jamie’s house, located in Weston-Super-Mare). We then proceeded to film.

We choose this scene as it incorporated some close-ups as well as some shots with a shallow depth of field, we also wanted it because it would be a fun project to film (which it was), and it would also teach us some editing skills where we had to edit a mask on-top of Dan who played the Scream character.

Below Is the original clip that we based our scene on:

Below is the story board Dan made for our project listing all the scenes we would need for our shoot on the 26th of February.

Dan then proceeded to create a script for the scene which we would come to use when we were filming (It made things so much easier)!

Below Is our shot list that I created carefully, making sure every scene was the same as In the original clip, I later typed up the shot list so it could be more easily seen.

Reflection:

After we had finished filming this project I had thoroughly enjoyed the time I had spent doing it. The shoot took Dan and me 4 hours to complete! However, I believe the finished product we had made is worthy of the ‘Wazzup’ title. However, we would not have been able to do this if Jamie had not let us film him and his house, so thank you to him! However, it was not all swings and roundabouts, when we began to shoot Jamie did not want to be filmed, so to help get him to change his mind Dan, and I reassured him that it would all be fine and that it was all easy. We both helped Jamie with the speaking also, as he was initially quite quiet, so I got him to shout/speak louder from cut to cut. However, the rest of the filming went smoothly and even though it sometimes took multiple tries to get a good cut, we persisted and got the best we could with the equipment we had.

Then came the editing which I began on Wednesday the 27th of February. For the most part, I believe we did a solid job making sure each clip from the original scene matched the timings of our own so when you run them next to each other each clip is the same length and although this was a time-consuming job to do, although it was worth it. Next was the audio which was harder than you’d think to do matching everyone’s ‘Wazzup’s’ over each other, at first the sound was a bit drifty, shifting from one person’s voice to another. Then after some feedback from Dan Clark, I fixed the issues and made it sound more natural. After this I shifted the control to Dan who edited all the special effects (the masks and smoke), I think he did an excellent job of it, though he could have done even better if we were sat in a darker room and we could actually see the screen of the laptop, this was because the room he was in was way too bright, and he could not see what on earth he was doing, so much so that we didn’t notice there was a big black box on the left-hand side of the second from last cut!

However, from this short project, I have learnt that I am putting more trust in other’s, when it comes to the camera work and production as Dan sorted out the filming location, Idea, third actor, special effects as well as some shots that came out very good. I also wrote out some paperwork as well as shot most of the scene and edited the clips together. So, from this, I am happy that I am now more confident to work with others, as well as this I’ve learnt some new techniques like the letterbox effect that we used in editing as well as I am becoming better at handling the editing software, premier pro. I also used some quality camera shots that I would like to use again, but overall, I believe this workshop has benefited my skills that I will undoubtedly use in the actual music video.
