Today's lesson was on 'music video conventions'. We talked about how different music was represented throughout different types of music, we also talked about how different artists vary in style and why, for example, one artist's music could be about proving a point, for example, Childish Gambino - This is America, where he highlights many of Americas issues in the video such and drugs, gun laws and racism. Other artists, however, may be about making a music video, about love, such as John Newman's - Love Me Again.
Below are the two music video examples that I talked about:
Childish Gambino - This Is America (Official Video)
John Newman - Love Me Again (Official Music Video)
What I have also learnt is the Style is essential to a music video and artist, for this you need to know artist style, you should not do anything too different from the artists meaning behind the song (unless the video is experimental). Next comes lyric interpretation - you could visibly add props to suit the period of songs, but you should make sure they are represented and fitting for the deeper meaning/meaning of the song.
Symbolically - hint at things (props / people / locations)
Visibly - show something (Props / people / locations)
Production tips:
A tip we were given was to edit the cuts to the music, this can add a needed flow to the music video also making it easier to watch for the consumer. Other tips we were given. Next, we were told we have a location manager who does recces, props and risk assessments. Next, we were told the visuals have to be great, also consider colours in the post and check the white balance before filming, however luckily, my GH4 has auto white balance.
In conclusion, another good lesson with some useful tips for creating our music video, I will be on my next blogs about some of my group's first ideas and how some ideas would and would not work when it comes to creating our final piece.
