Factual television is a genre of non-fiction television programming that documents actual events and people.
A strong premise
Tell an interesting story with a unique angle that will engage and inform the audience.
Characters
Include interesting characters who are trying to achieve something.
Voice over / presenter
This keeps the audience updated with videos and images whilst telling a story.
Presentation of facts
A program will back up its statements with facts and evidence to add credibility.
Interviews and use of experts
Used to show realism and facts or give witness accounts making it more believable.
Use of suspense, concealing outcome
Only revealing the outcome at the end of the program, keeping the audience watching.
Editing montage
Condensing time and space.
Slow motion
Slowing down the forage to heighten or accentuate a moment.
Archive footage film and photographs.
Titling
Using consistent titling throughout to inform the audience of subjects name or location.

-a filmmaker must consider lots of issues before they start to film.
Access
Can they gain access to the people or facts or locations they need.
What permissions do they need.
Which viewpoint is the documentary portraying?
An impartial or objective view:
-no associations with the subject - not supporting any side in an argument. Presenting facts fairly without opinion.
A bias or subjective view:
-a preconceived opinion about something or someone influenced by personal feelings, tastes or opinions.
A bias could be Favorable or unfavorable.
Representation
Is the person or subject fairly represented.
