PEGI Ratings

PEGI put symbols on games (usually on the front of the cases) to allow the parents who would be looking at the rating see the category, it helps them to see what type of genre the game is and what it contains. this can include drugs, fear, discrimination, sex and others seen in the picture.

The ratings are mainly for the children's parents so that they can see what sort of game the child wants to buy. PEGI helps the parent decide whether the game is suitable for the child or not, by using easy to understand ratings and the fact the ratings are clearly labelled on the front of the games.

For example, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an 18 as it is a free-roaming style game where the player can choose to kill, discriminate and use violence, this game may not be suitable to a 12-year-old hence it is rated an 18. However, Rocket League, which is a 3 (the lowest rating), is still a tactical game but involves no violence, no bad language and no fear, it is just football with cars instead of players, it contains online multiplayer, however, there is no voice chat, so children cannot speak to older/other individuals who could be dangerous through online communication. This is a good measure to prevent paedophilia and make the game safe for children.

PEGI 3:

The content shown in PEGI 3 titles is suitable for all ages, this means that the game should contain no sounds or images that are likely to scare or frighten young children. There are allowances for a mild form of violence in a comical or childish way for example (Frozen game) where you can freeze objects. Finally, no bad language should be present in the game.

PEGI 7:

Game content may contain certain scenes or sounds that may frighten or scare a younger generation, children would fall into this category. There may be very mild forms of language implied, but it must not to be detailed. However, non-realistic violence is acceptable for a game with this rating.

PEGI 12:

This category contains games that show the violence of a slightly more graphic nature compared to PEGI 3, it contains more non-realistic violence towards human-like characters. Also, sexual innuendo or sexual posturing can be present, all the language spoken in this category must be mild. Gambling scenes can also be present for example, a game that in real life would be played for money e.g. card games.

PEGI 16:

This rating is used once the description of violence or sexual nudity reached a stage that it would be similar looking to a real-life scenario. The use of foul language in this category of games can be more extreme. Games of chance and the use of tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs can also be present.

PEGI 18:

The PEGI 18 rating is used once the description of violence (or sexual activity) reaches a stage that the looks and the same physics of violence would be expected in a real-life situation. The use of bad language in this category can be more extreme, while games of chance and the use of tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs can also be present.
