Types of Music Videos

Today's lesson was on 'different types of music video's' , it was a really fun workshop where we were looking at the different styles each category of music video had and also discussing how different category work with particular music styles for example Mumford & Sons and some of their music videos being filmed in a barn as a performance, we were also discussing how this would work for them as their music has a countryside feeling. We also looked at experimental videos like 'This Is America' by Childish Gambino where many things can be interpreted by the video itself.

Below are the different category of music videos and some examples for each one.

Performance

• Whole way through the same artist or band just shots of them.

• A band will play their instruments throughout the whole video.

• Example: Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man

Narrative

• The video plays out a story.

• The artist does not appear.

• Non Linier or Linier

• Speeds up and down with the music

• Example: Maroon 5 - Animals

Combined Narrative & Performance

• Inter-cut between a band / artist performing and a narrative

• The band / artist perform within the narrative

• There can be lots of movement

• Singer Perform's in Narrative

• Example; Gary Barlow - let me go, where he finds a piano and makes a community happy.

• Example: OneRepublic - Counting Stars - multi stranded but Linked right at end.

• Example: Bastille - Pompeii

Experiential

• A video with a random story or imagery that can be interpreted in different ways

• Can be inter cut with a performance

• Example: Childish Gambino - This Is America

• Imagine Dragons - Thunder

Actuality

• Used actual video footage to tell a story or create a feeling

• Mostly uses 'everyday' people or events

• Often inter cut with performance

• Example: Ed Sheeran - Galway Girl

• Example: Pharrell Williams - Happy

Homage

• The whole video is paying respect to a reference to another person / music / video / film

• Example: Wiz Khalifa - See You Again

Parody

• An imitation of a style for comedic effect

• Example: Eminem - Without Me

Evaluation

In recap, I believe I have learnt the different styles of the music videos I have seen today. I will hopefully go on to use on of use one of these styles for my music project, I am personally temped to make a combined narrative piece, but I am open to the rest of my teams ideas!
