Primary Research

A few weeks ago, I thought it would be a good idea to get some primary research from some people down at my work and what they thought of my music video, ideas and plans.

I started by writing down a few questions that would be interesting for me to find out then write about. I asked three people these questions, recording the interviews on my phone. Then I also asked one other person what they thought. However, I did not record this as we talked a while ago, before I came up with the idea of doing some mini interviews.

The reason I was commencing this research, was that I thought it would be an excellent idea to get some thorough primary research. I wanted to find out what people thought of some of the scenes we had planned, for example, the scenes where we would be implying our actors would be using drugs. I also wanted to know what people thought of our groups idea and whether they thought we were a bit too ambitious with all our plans. I tried to interview people who listened to music as this way I would be getting more relevant answers.

The questions I asked are below:

  • Do you like Pink Floyd’s music?

  • How about their style?

  • What do you think a Pink Floyd music video should look like, colours and how light they thought they should be?

  • What do you think of our idea? Do you think it will work?

  • Do you think that we are a bit too ambitious with our plans?

  • Is there anything else that you think we could include into our video?

  • Do you think we should use references for drugs in our video?

So, below are the interviews I had conducted.

The first person I chose to interview was a woman called Roz on our lunch break at work. I found Roz’s answers interesting especially when I asked her whether we should use references to drugs in our video. I agreed when she said we should only use them in a way that it prevents people from abusing them. I also respected the fact that she thought we could make our plans work despite our ambitious approach.

Next, I chose to interview a man in his 50s called Shaun who does enjoy Pink Floyd's music.

After interviewing Shaun, I was glad to hear he shared the same idea as me when he pointed out, he felt like the video should be colourful, I also liked how he thought that the feeling should be relaxed, and this implies to me our cinematic style of filming may work. I also appreciated the fact that Shaun mentioned to me that we should consider our costumes for the performance as it is based in the 70s, but overall, I was happy with this interview, and it gave me some more confidence to keep going ahead with our idea and hopefully it will turn out as planned.

Finally, I Interviewed another man called, Nick and asked him what he thought about our ideas.

After interviewing Nick, I was interested when he talked about the use of smoke, although we do not have a smoke machine, we could put some effects over the video in the post to make the video feel as if there is some mystery, although, I am not sure how well this could work. I also found it interesting when Nick talked about the drugs, he said “we should be careful to an extent”, which I also agree with, we don’t want to sell drugs in our music video, but rather deter the use of them.

After this I called my friend Ross to see what he thought of the idea, he was intrigued and wanted to do some acting for us, but unfortunately, Ross would not be available at the time of filming, even though he would look perfect as one of the younger teenagers. Ross also liked our ideas and thought we could be onto something with our concept. He loved the locations we had in mind as well as our transition ideas for our final piece.

Overall, I think I had received some excellent insight from today, of what our target audience think of our idea and concept. The fact they all had faith in us making this music video work, gave me some confidence, as I was starting to become a little overwhelmed with the whole plan!

Thanks for reading.
