Filming Day 4 (and a re-shoot)
Today is Saturday the 27th of April; today we were filming only in Weston-Super-Mare. I began the day, as usual, making sure all the batteries were fully charged, cleaned all my camera lenses and mounted the GH4 equipped with the 12mm-35mm to my Steadicam. Next, I met with Joel loaded my car and drove into Weston-Super-Mare. We arrived slightly late, due to a fallen tree blocking our road, but this didn’t matter too much as we had all day to capture three short scenes.
The first thing we did when we arrived at Treats café was asked the owner kindly to fill out our location permission form and then we bought the coffees. We then all got to work setting up the scene upstairs. We had a top-down shot where Archie and Joel would be planning for the house robbery in Wrington; I also captured a second angle with my 12mm-35mm lens offset slightly to the right of the 42.5mm lens which was above the centre of the table where Archie and Joel were drawing. I also captured some B-Roll of Archie fiddling with the pencil and some close-ups of the pencil contacting the paper; this was all to make sure we had enough footage from this scene. When we finished this scene, I quickly gobbled down a full English breakfast, then proceeded to set up the cameras for the second scene in the café, which takes place a few days after they burgle the house in Wrington.
I started by setting the 42.5mm lens in the tripod again looking down where the newspaper would be slammed down on the table by Archie when he approaches Joel, who is Just finishing his breakfast. This shot turned out really well (after a few re-takes), the re-takes were needed because in the newspaper you could see colour on some of the middle pages, newspapers did not have colour in the 70s, so we had to shoot again (luckily Kasha picked this out when we were reviewing the footage on the GH4’s viewfinder). The rest of this filming for this scene went very well, so we had one GH4 in the tripod, then I was also stood behind Joel, holding the GH4 rigged onto the Steadicam, which almost looked better (after review, then the shot from the tripod). We then had a few shots of them laughing at one another, then, finally both walking into the camera, to create a transition into the final shot. I was walking back with the Steadicam, so this was quite a hard shot for me to capture. That was a wrap for the café shots, next we went to Revolver music shop.
In this location, it was challenging to film; there were so many products in the shop that were not from the 70s. We knew after we were finished that we needed to come back as after a review back at college on the next Monday, you could see that there were references to Twitter and Facebook in the back of some shots, as well as CDs in another. So, I am writing this section after we re-shot some footage on Wednesday the 1st of May.
The footage that we managed to capture on Saturday the 27th of April, was Joel walking up to the shop counter to distract the owner from Archie stealing the Pink Floyd record. The shots of Archie stealing the record were all compromised by modern objects in the background of the shots. Hence, we went back for a re-shoot. During the re-shoot we utilised higher angles to cut out as much of the shop as possible, we did this with myself resting the Steadicam on my shoulder, and it was pointing directly down at the record that Archie, stealthily moves under his leather jacket. These shots after review turned out rather spot on with no modern objects in the shots. So, from this scene we have a clip of Archie and Joel entering the shop, Joel distracting the owner, Archie stealing the record, and then both leaving.
Our final location for the 27th of April, was Kasha’s house located in Worle. We arrived around 12pm and began filming promptly after. The first shot in this location that we filmed, was a shelf pulled away from a wall, and me stood behind it with the 12mm GH4 on the Steadicam, I performed a sliding action behind the back of the shelves, while Joel, was searching through some records eventually finding the one they had stolen a few weeks prior. I then captured a side shot of Joel pulling the Record out from the shelf again, slider-like movement, but with the Steadicam. This shot turned out well in my opinion; it was smooth and precise. Next, were some shots of Archie taking out the record then proceeding to place it on Kasha’s old record player, which was a thing of beauty. After this, I captured a top-down shot of the record playing and slowly moving around, which again looked silky smooth. After this filming was complete, the only thing that was left was the re-shoot that we completed the following Wednesday!
