My Reasearch

In the PIMS project I must attend an interview to apply for a job; the one I choose was a Camera, Director, Editor. The position is based at Mendip Media located at 23 & 24 Barnack Trading Estate, Novers Hill, Bristol BS3 5QE.

During my research about the job, I found that Mendip Media specialise in promotional videos, training videos, presentation videos and social media videos. I have also had a look at Mendip Medias showreel, their style of the film mostly aligns with my own, including slow cinematic shots including some drone shots in their video they made for Hinkley point.

Other research I commenced was how much I would be paid for taking on a job such as this, and I’m looking at an average of £46,368 annually, which I think is a pretty reasonable payment.

Things that Mendip Media want to see in me is that I am a good team player, I have a full driving licence and a car, have adequate editing skills on Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro, which is not industry-standard software, Avid would be more preferable for the type of work they create, so perhaps I could have a creative influence there. Mendip Media also shoot on Canon C200’s in 4K which is a camera I am familiar with, and they also want someone who knows their lighting, some animation skills on After Effects, which I posses and colour correcting which I am currently still getting the hang of.

Overall the contract is eight months with an option to extend if both parties agree. I would love to take on this job, yes it would be stressful, but I think I could not only benefit my skills but also benefit the standard of videos directed by Mendip Media.

I look forward to the interview.

Typical Interview Questions activity

Tell us about you?

I am a hard-working and motivated individual who is currently studying a 2-year extended diploma in creative media, hoping to achieve a distinction. My goal is to find a job in the TV industry as a production runner, where I hope to perform administrative and practical duties. My ambition is to one day, gain enough experience and skills to become a DOP.

I have had a love for the media industry ever since I produced my first YouTube video. Since then, I have made much progress in both my personal development and practical skills. I lead by example and have an organised, dedicated work ethic; I would be able to perform various duties as a Camera Director Editor. Being a technical and practical person, with a high level of confidence, I could also help preparing equipment for a shoot, help dealing with clients on and off the phone.

What is your biggest weakness?

My biggest weakness is suffering from burnouts, and often after a very productive period, I am personally working on obtaining more sleep and getting in more calories during these particularly stressful times and also supporting Liverpool ads to the stress!

What is your biggest strength?

My biggest strength behind a camera, I get a thrill out of creating a video, something I hadn’t experience before. It gets stressful, but I love every minute of it, and I pour all my effort into getting cinematic, stable footage.

What is your proudest achievement?

Other than passing all of my GCSE’s my proudest achievement has got to be a split decision between a documentary I directed and shot as part of a team project, during which 2 out of 5 of the people in my group dropped out of the course, and it was a struggle with only three of us on the project, but we got it done, and the reviews were fantastic! I Also was a DOP for a music video in my first year at college that managed to get a Distington. I was especially proud of that as the whole team worked so hard on getting us to that grade.

Who is your inspiration?

YouTubers called Dan Mace and Colin Furze, Dan creates a video series called not normal, he has a style of filming that I envy, as well as Colin who get me into a film in the first place, his videos were crazy, where he used to blow up things! Which is what I initially used to do on my first YouTube channel!

My mock Interview Feedback for camera operator, this activity was to get an understanding of the pressure I could feel in an actual interview, I feel as if I coped reasonably well, but needed improvement with not babbling on, eye contact, which is a natural thing I do as I am deaf in my left ear I turn my head, so I will definitely need to put my hearing aids in for this interview. I also need to sit up straight and not shake my leg and finally be relaxed and confident; no stuttering and keep chill. However, my knowledge and experience were up to scratch.
